For over a decade Thor Poletest™ has provided networks with PHI™ (Pole Health Index™) - the gold standard in objective and accurate pole condition data and made possible by a simple 60-second non-destructive hammer test at the base of the pole. Pole condition for the entire length of the pole from its tip to its base under the sidewalk is clear and even the embeded depth of the pole can be provided from the same test. Reliable data every time, no breaking concrete and no drilling!
Millions of timber utility poles are set into sidewalks in our most densely populated urban areas. The strength and condition of these poles and the risks they present has now been found to be poorly understood. Traditional sound, dig and drill inspections cannot generally be undertaken due to concrete and asphalt around the poles base, and regardless of this, these techniques are entirely subjective.
The issue for energy and telecommunicaitons distributors is a systemic one and has been found now to be one that is perpetuated by sidewalk poles being excluded from many of the inspection programmes and contracts offered by third party inspection organizations. Non-destructive testing NDT and PHI™ is the answer.
Knowing the strength and serviceability of your timber pole assets in urban environments also becomes easy with Thor Poletest™ Restricted Access Testing. The same test equipment can be used in situations where only a very small portion of the pole base is accessible to a worker, bringing poles that are extremely close to buildings and other infrastructure back into inspection and maintenance programmes.

Sit in on any utility planning meeting and you’ll see the same challenge: project delivery dominates the agenda, while asset management fights for attention.

As Groundline enters a new phase of growth and I find myself at the helm, I am in an interesting position where I am looking through two lenses. One on the ANZ market that I have operated in for 10+ years and the other on our global markets (UK, EU and USA).

After 21 years of growth, Groundline enters a new chapter—one that underscores our commitment to governance, succession planning, and sustainable growth, while creating development opportunities for our incredible team.
